This body of work is deeply informed by Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick and its vast ocean of metaphor and absurdity. Through the ceramic process, Matt explores the shifting boundary between the observed and the imagined, using saturated color and tactile surfaces as vehicles for abstraction. The sculptures inhabit an ecologically gothic space where familiar forms become otherworldly and the biological becomes mythical. Like Moby-Dick itself, the sculptures exist simultaneously as subject and symbol, evoking the beauty and strangeness of a watery world that remains only partially known to us.
Matt Zorn is a ceramic artist from West Union, West Virginia. He received his Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University and his Bachelor of Arts from Davis & Elkins College. Zorn currently resides and works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he teaches ceramics at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild.
